Yes. Widevine DRM is disabled by default in Umbra for privacy reasons, but you can enable it in Settings → Privacy & Security → DRM Content. Once enabled, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and other Widevine-protected services work normally.
Both are Firefox forks focused on privacy. The key difference is usability: Librewolf applies maximum privacy settings which break many sites and disable all DRM. Umbra takes a tiered approach — you can choose Balanced, Strict, or Maximum privacy, and DRM is opt-in rather than completely removed. The goal is a browser you can use every day without fighting it.
Yes. Umbra is a fork of Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release) 140.8. We chose ESR for its longer security support window and stability. Our privacy patches are applied on top of the ESR base, and all changes are documented at about:umbra.
No. All Firefox telemetry, crash reporting, health reporting, and Mozilla studies are disabled at build time using enterprise policies. Umbra does not connect to any Umbra-controlled servers. The only network connections Umbra makes are the ones you initiate by browsing the web.
Yes. Umbra uses the standard Firefox extension system. You can install any extension from addons.mozilla.org (AMO). uBlock Origin comes pre-installed and pre-configured; you can add, remove, or replace it just like any other extension.
Windows and Linux are currently supported. Linux packages are available as Flatpak, RPM, DEB, and tar.xz. A Windows installer (.exe) is provided for Windows 10 and later. macOS support is not available at this time.
Open the Privacy Control Center via the toolbar icon or through Settings. You can select Balanced, Strict, or Maximum globally. You can also set per-site overrides for individual domains — useful for banking sites or work applications that need relaxed settings without touching your global preferences.
Yes — that is exactly what it is designed for. The Balanced preset is tuned to work with the vast majority of websites out of the box. If a site has issues, you can add a per-site override without changing your global privacy settings.
